  • Coyotes Love New York City

You never know where you might see a coyote next. On Monday morning, police chased another coyote through the streets of Queens. That makes sighting number seven this year in New York City. On Saturday, cops caught a coyote roaming the streets of Battery Park. And earlier last week, NYPD launched a full on search -- chopper included -- after another was spotted on the Upper West Side. Wildlife experts say you don't need to worry. Most coyotes are afraid of humans. But with the population growing and more sightings being reported in Manhattan, the goal now is to keep them afraid. So where are they coming from? Travis Brady with the Greenburgh Nature Center in Scarsdale says most of the coyotes we've seen lately are from Westchester and upstate. They are fully grown and kicked out by the...

  • PURCHASE OF MANHATTAN - Concert Opera

The concert opera PURCHASE OF MANHATTAN sings-to-life the drama of New York's hidden beginning. Was the island's price tag really $24 worth of beads? A production of the Lenape Center in Manhattan, the opera's intuitive quality captivates Indian and non-Indian audiences alike with an intelligent and inspired look into the life of Manhattan's first inhabitants, the Lenape. PURCHASE OF MANHATTAN mingles together a perfect blend of operatic and American Indian singing styles about the famous beginnings of "New Netherland," later becoming "New Amsterdam" and finally "New York." By keenly re-staging New York's founding from a Lenape perspective, the opera blazes uncharted territory with shrewdness and eloquence. PURCHASE OF MANHATTAN is exquisitely scored for three solo voices, chorus, Americ...

  • Living in Brooklyn, New York

Presented by Sotheby’s International Realty Affiliates LLC For more information go to http://s.sir.com/2arHLTE Brooklyn isn’t a city. It’s a metropolis of a borough. It’s also an idea. Its culture and urban sensibility have been exported to the point that Brooklynization is a phenomenon. Trendy restaurants, shops and businesses bearing the Brooklyn name--or one of its neighborhoods--appear in countries from Germany to Japan. And yet Brooklyn is very much a collection of communities, many with inviting green spaces and spectacular water views. Brooklyn real estate prices, whether pre-war, post-war or landmark, rival those across the East River in Manhattan. That doesn't surprise Brooklynites who never saw homes in the borough as a consolation prize. Dumbo and Williamsburg are former ...

Isaac's disillusioned (and married) best friend Yale (Michael Murphy) has begun an affair with the cerebral writer Mary Wilke (Diane Keaton). While Isaac makes a last minute, sink-or-swim decision to quit his job and devote all of his time to book writing, and neurotically moans about what the lack of a full time job will do to him ("My parents won't have as good of a seat in the synagogue," he moans. "They'll be far away from God... away from the action") Yale is crippled by his lack of resolve, as indicated by his inability to leave his wife Emily (Anne Byrne). They are fully grown and kicked out by their mothers, much like 18 year olds off to college. They need to find their own territory to start raising their own families away from other coyotes, Brady says. That is the good and bad thing about moving to Manhattan. No there aren't many coyotes here, but there are a lot of people and potential sources of food, like small house pets. That is why animal control says if you see one in your neighborhood keep your dog on a leash and pet food indoors. Wildlife experts say most of the coyotes spotted around the city are living alone but there are a few specifically in the Bronx and in Queens that are breeding. So they say if you see one, don't approach it. Just call animal control. --JENNIFER LAHMERS

PURCHASE OF MANHATTAN is exquisitely scored for three solo voices, chorus, American Indian singers, orchestra and Native American flute, by preeminent Mohican composer, Brent Michael Davids, in collaboration with celebrated Abenaki author, Joseph Bruchac, for the libretto. The music interlaces American Indian and Western European styles in a hybrid mix that is exuberant and dazzling; it's an amalgamated compositional style that classical music critic Bill Parker describes as "never glib or facile, but rich in resonance." As a Mohican from a tribe once residing in lower Manhattan, Brooklyn and the Bronx, the composer's lyrical conjuring of early Lenape life is unique and bold. Similar to his creations for Chanticleer and Kronos Quartet, we straightaway grasp the opera's primal earthiness amid the sparkling orchestration, making our ears dance with delight. PURCHASE OF MANHATTAN was commissioned by the Lenape Center in Manhattan with support from the Collegiate Church of New York and funded in part by the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian's Expressive Arts program, the Indian Arts Research Center of the School for Advanced Research with support from the Ronald and Susan Dubin Artist Fellowship, the Native Arts & Culture Foundation's Artist Fellowship, and ongoing support from Sharon Doty Davids. The promo audio was edited from a performance by the Society for New Music in Syracuse NY, featuring soloists Laura Ensin, Jonathan Howell, Steven Hull, and conductor Sara Jobin. On the beat he sells murder, tragedy and anything that passes for the truth. At home he is a model family man, devoted to his loving wife (Jennifer Beals). But when a seductive stranger (Yvonne Strahovski) asks him to dig into the unsolved murder of her filmmaker husband Simon (Campbell Scott), he can't resist. In this modern version of a classic film noir, we follow Porter as he is drawn into a very nasty case of sexual obsession and blackmail - one that threatens his job, his marriage, and his life. MANHATTAN NIGHT will be released by Lionsgate Premiere in theaters and On Demand May 20, 2016. Lionsgate Premiere, Grindstone Entertainment Group and 13 Films present in association with Sparkle Roll Media Corporation and Big Indie Pictures a production of Fable House, Untravelled Worlds and DeCubellis Films. Manhattan movie clips: http://j.mp/2h3TshC BUY THE MOVIE: http://j.mp/2gbpj2Z Don't miss the HOTTEST NEW TRAILERS: http://bit.ly/1u2y6pr CLIP DESCRIPTION: Isaac (Woody Allen) tries to convince Tracy (Mariel Hemingway) not to go to London. FILM DESCRIPTION: On the heels of Annie Hall, the Oscar-winning romantic comedy that rocketed Woody Allen to the front ranks of American filmmakers, Manhattan continued Allen's romantic obsessions in a slightly darker, more pessimistic vein. Allen stars as Isaac Davis, a TV comedy writer sick of the pap he is forced to churn out and harboring dreams of being the great American novelist. His love life is in barbed-wire territory: he is tormented by his second ex-wife Jill (Meryl Streep), a lesbian who has written a tell-all book about their marriage, and he is dating teenager Tracy (Mariel Hemingway), to whom he refuses to commit, and keeps hinting that a breakup may be imminent. Meanwhile, Isaac and Mary begin to fall for one another. Tracy then tells Isaac the basic truth that none of his hung-up friends and past lovers fully realizes: "You have to have a little more faith in people." Manhattan is both a seriocomic dissection of perpetually dissatisfied New Yorkers and an ode to the city itself, filmed in glorious black-and-white by ace cinematographer Gordon Willis, and set to a score of rhapsodic George Gershwin music. Dumbo and Williamsburg are former industrial areas where old factories and warehouses have been rehabbed into pricy condominiums and lofts. Dumbo is the acronym for Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass. This territory, largely situated between the Brooklyn and Manhattan bridges, is now an incubator for art and technology. It has managed to retain its gritty noir feel and industrial roots, which accounts for its starring role in countless films and photo shoots. Williamsburg has become synonymous with hipster culture--music, fashion and food. The low rents that initially attracted artists to these two enclaves of reinvention are a thing of the past. ClassicBrownstone Brooklyn” is found in neighborhoods like Park Slope and Brooklyn Heights. Park Slope is a family-friendly community of shady blocks framed by a low-slung skyline that is adjacent to Prospect Park, the 585-acre green masterpiece designed by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux, creators of New York’s Central Park. Brooklyn Heights is entirely a historic district--New York’s first, designated in 1965. The neighborhood is affluent, quiet and filled with architectural gems. One of its greatest treasures is the cantilevered Promenade that overlooks New York Harbor and Lower Manhattan as well as Brooklyn Bridge Park. The park, which opened in 2010, is a massive complex of athletic fields, food concessions, bike paths and pool with a full schedule of cultural events, entertainment and activities. From Brooklyn Heights, New York’s financial district is a quick zip on the subway. But that’s not the only way to access Manhattan. The favorite means is walking to it across iconic Brooklyn Bridge.
