Presented by Sotheby’s International Realty Affiliates LLC For more information go to http://s.sir.com/2arHLTE Brooklyn isn’t a city. It’s a metropolis of a borough. It’s also an idea. Its culture and urban sensibility have been exported to the point that Brooklynization is a phenomenon. Trendy restaurants, shops and businesses bearing the Brooklyn name--or one of its neighborhoods--appear in countries from Germany to Japan. And yet Brooklyn is very much a collection of communities, many with inviting green spaces and spectacular water views. Brooklyn real estate prices, whether pre-war, post-war or landmark, rival those across the East River in Manhattan. That doesn't surprise Brooklynites who never saw homes in the borough as a consolation prize. Dumbo and Williamsburg are former ...

The concert opera PURCHASE OF MANHATTAN sings-to-life the drama of New York's hidden beginning. Was the island's price tag really $24 worth of beads? A production of the Lenape Center in Manhattan, the opera's intuitive quality captivates Indian and non-Indian audiences alike with an intelligent and inspired look into the life of Manhattan's first inhabitants, the Lenape. PURCHASE OF MANHATTAN mingles together a perfect blend of operatic and American Indian singing styles about the famous beginnings of "New Netherland," later becoming "New Amsterdam" and finally "New York." By keenly re-staging New York's founding from a Lenape perspective, the opera blazes uncharted territory with shrewdness and eloquence. PURCHASE OF MANHATTAN is exquisitely scored for three solo voices, chorus, American Indian singers, orchestra and Native American flute, by preeminent Mohican composer, Brent Michael Davids, in collaboration with celebrated Abenaki author, Joseph Bruchac, for the libretto. The music interlaces American Indian and Western European styles in a hybrid mix that is exuberant and dazzling; it's an amalgamated compositional style that classical music critic Bill Parker describes as "never glib or facile, but rich in resonance." As a Mohican from a tribe once residing in lower Manhattan, Brooklyn and the Bronx, the composer's lyrical conjuring of early Lenape life is unique and bold. Similar to his creations for Chanticleer and Kronos Quartet, we straightaway grasp the opera's primal earthiness amid the sparkling orchestration, making our ears dance with delight. PURCHASE OF MANHATTAN was commissioned by the Lenape Center in Manhattan with support from the Collegiate Church of New York and funded in part by the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian's Expressive Arts program, the Indian Arts Research Center of the School for Advanced Research with support from the Ronald and Susan Dubin Artist Fellowship, the Native Arts & Culture Foundation's Artist Fellowship, and ongoing support from Sharon Doty Davids. The promo audio was edited from a performance by the Society for New Music in Syracuse NY, featuring soloists Laura Ensin, Jonathan Howell, Steven Hull, and conductor Sara Jobin. His love life is in barbed-wire territory: he is tormented by his second ex-wife Jill (Meryl Streep), a lesbian who has written a tell-all book about their marriage, and he is dating teenager Tracy (Mariel Hemingway), to whom he refuses to commit, and keeps hinting that a breakup may be imminent. Isaac's disillusioned (and married) best friend Yale (Michael Murphy) has begun an affair with the cerebral writer Mary Wilke (Diane Keaton). While Isaac makes a last minute, sink-or-swim decision to quit his job and devote all of his time to book writing, and neurotically moans about what the lack of a full time job will do to him ("My parents won't have as good of a seat in the synagogue," he moans. "They'll be far away from God... away from the action") Yale is crippled by his lack of resolve, as indicated by his inability to leave his wife Emily (Anne Byrne). Meanwhile, Isaac and Mary begin to fall for one another. Tracy then tells Isaac the basic truth that none of his hung-up friends and past lovers fully realizes: "You have to have a little more faith in people." Manhattan is both a seriocomic dissection of perpetually dissatisfied New Yorkers and an ode to the city itself, filmed in glorious black-and-white by ace cinematographer Gordon Willis, and set to a score of rhapsodic George Gershwin music. Dumbo and Williamsburg are former industrial areas where old factories and warehouses have been rehabbed into pricy condominiums and lofts. Dumbo is the acronym for Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass. This territory, largely situated between the Brooklyn and Manhattan bridges, is now an incubator for art and technology. It has managed to retain its gritty noir feel and industrial roots, which accounts for its starring role in countless films and photo shoots. Williamsburg has become synonymous with hipster culture--music, fashion and food. The low rents that initially attracted artists to these two enclaves of reinvention are a thing of the past. ClassicBrownstone Brooklyn” is found in neighborhoods like Park Slope and Brooklyn Heights. Park Slope is a family-friendly community of shady blocks framed by a low-slung skyline that is adjacent to Prospect Park, the 585-acre green masterpiece designed by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux, creators of New York’s Central Park. Brooklyn Heights is entirely a historic district--New York’s first, designated in 1965. The neighborhood is affluent, quiet and filled with architectural gems. One of its greatest treasures is the cantilevered Promenade that overlooks New York Harbor and Lower Manhattan as well as Brooklyn Bridge Park. The park, which opened in 2010, is a massive complex of athletic fields, food concessions, bike paths and pool with a full schedule of cultural events, entertainment and activities. From Brooklyn Heights, New York’s financial district is a quick zip on the subway. But that’s not the only way to access Manhattan. The favorite means is walking to it across iconic Brooklyn Bridge.

Here are the top 10 most amazing, beautiful, and even creepy haunted islands, its shocking how mysterious these places are. Subscribe to Knowledge Feed for Myth Mania Mondays, Fact Tree Tuesdays, Wildlife Wednesdays, Origin Thursdays, Fun Fact Fridays & Wildcard Weekends. 6. Gouqi (gooki) Stunning pictures recently surfaced of this abandoned village on Gouqi Island, one of almost 400 islands near the mouth of China’s Yangtze (Yang si) River. As recently as 50 years ago these islands were often home to thriving communities. Today, many of the islands in the Shengsi archipelago lay deserted as a result of massive growth in the shipping industry. The bay isn't capable of holding such a large number of ships. Consequently, there are many forsaken villages in the area, but certainly none as breathtaking as the one on Gouqi Island. 5. Battleship Island Lying 9 miles from Nagasaki off the coast of southern Japan, Hashima Island is one of 505 uninhabited islands in the area. Hashima was not always uninhabited, however. Japan permanently populated the island with coal miners from 1887 to 1974. The workers that inhabited the land were mostly Korean and Chinese forced laborers sent to the island by the Japanese. Coal reserves in the isle were near depletion, and the land was eventually completely abandoned until the country reopened it to tourists in 2009. Today the island serves as a reminder of the rapid industrialization of a prosperous nation and its unsavory history of practicing forced labor. The site was deemed a UNESCO World Heritage site in July of 2015. 4. Ross Island Originally inhabited by the British, this island was abandoned sometime around the turn of the 19th century because of harsh weather and a tough living environment. The island was reopened in 1887 and used as a British jail and penal colony until the Japanese briefly took control of the area during World War 2. After the war, the British gave the island to the newly formed Indian government, who set up a small naval base and, in 1993 a museum. Today, abandoned British and Japanese structures remain, though they are slowly being covered in the roots of wild Ficus trees. 3. Adak Today Adak is home to abandoned buildings that have no electricity or running water. The Alaskan island's current state is in stark contrast to what it once was. In the late 1940,’s the island served as a U.S. naval air station and had a peak population of six thousand. Adak was also used to spy on the Soviets during the Cold War. Today the island has a population of roughly 60 people, all of which live in the city of Adak, in the northern part of the isle. The military has had no presence on the island since selling the land and buildings in 1997. Since then the buildings have been left to decay and lie at the mercy of the area’s harsh weather, creating an ominous, creepy and fascinating environment. 2. Ripapa Just off the east coast of New Zealand, this island was once a battleground for warring Maori tribes. The British used Ripapa, or Ripa, as a quarantine station for arriving ships and also as a prison in the late 1800’s. New Zealand built Fort Jervois (Jarvis) on the land during tensions with Russia in 1886. New Zealand's army would occupy the fort during World War 1 and again during World War 2. The Christchurch earthquake damaged the fort in 2011 and caused the closure of the island. Ripa also holds two very rare guns which were completed in 1895 and never fired a shot in defense of the country. Earlier this year urban explorers swam to the island and took some incredible pictures of the site. 1. Pollepel Lying on the Hudson River 60 miles north of Manhattan Pollepel (paulapel), or Bannerman, Island was considered haunted by Indian tribes and was therefore used as a refuge for people trying to escape them. Businessman and arms dealer Frank Bannerman bought the island and built a castle on it to store equipment and weapons that he had purchased from the Spanish War. Eventually, the island became a property of the state of New York. A fire devoured the castle in the early 70’s, leaving only walls, which stand to this day. Artist Melissa McGill was allowed to create an installation of 17 stars on the island in late 2015. The lights shine for two hours a night and will be present for until next year.
